History of Utopia Tricking

Late 2017 / Early 2018
When I first decided to make a brand I remember ordering a new laptop that had a stylus for drawing and on a streetcar ride over to the monkeyvault for a session I felt strong inspiration for my first design.

I really wanted to go by intuition so the first thing I saw when in my mind’s eye was an orange plane with a sun and the letter “u”.

Since my purpose was to work towards achieving my dreams
( my own little utopia ) I wanted something to capture that energy.

The word Utopia really resonated with me, and no other trickers have used that name before.

The very first image is actually still located on my website on the top left corner here ! I also printed it off as a sticker too which was the first sticker to be put on my laptop.. which is now marred in many others.

I eventually started to host my own competitions called Battle Oasis, mostly with the intention to encourage the next generation to participate in battling - which is an opportunity that we ( trickers in my generation, and before ) didn’t really have access to.

I was pretty fortunate. I had a crew of about 15 who consistently attended, and entered and got to learn how to battle.

I had figured that my best chances of actually getting shirts out there, was by issuing them as prizes for competitions. My designs at first were pretty crappy (lol) but if there’s one thing that motivates me most is the idea of constant progress and growth. I don’t mind starting off small, or bad at something, cuz I know I’ll keep working and improving. Sure enough, years later, I get to look back and see how my designs have improved a bunch. I really love my art !

Here are my first attempts at making T Shirts through to about modern day 2024 level !

2021
I really loved Corona Virus. I was in a fortunate position. Maybe that’s insensitive to say though, considering the lockdowns negatively impacted a lot of people. At the time, my job was considered essential, so I was working, and the city being on lockdown actually empowered me. It was a really nice experience for me. I had a girl at the time who I was still seeing whenever we wanted, and even though the gyms were closed, I would just go outside and train in the park in the middle of the night. It was quiet and calm back then. Maybe living in the country would be a better lifestyle, but I’ve always lived in the city.

I came out of Corona Virus lockdowns, and went to the gyms when available. I still came back stronger than everyone else, and I went on to launching my own competition, a blanket challenge to anyone, of any skill level, to battle with any format, any time.

Even though my brand is about anime inspired dreams, i’m still a go-getter. I make my dreams come true, and I’m willing to prove myself. I’m glad I did.

A lot of people are about trying to control the situation, and the outcome - sure, that’s easy to do when people are following your orders, but when you’re a competitor, you’re supposed to fight against people who will never give up, and will be pushed even to cheating, if you continue to win over them. I’m glad I became a competitor, because it taught me so much.

By 2021, I was starting to see the elements of corruption that began to really start to plague the sport, and so by 2024, I had worked towards establishing an anti-corruption element to my work.

By this point, I had built the largest reservoir of tricking battle footage on planet earth, and began the niche of categorizing and evaluating all of these things.

This required a few things, like terminology was necessary to be invented, an accurate and authentic title and grading system, showing my steps and how I reached my conclusions, and having everything open to peer evaluation.

Anyways, the constant theme with me is going back forth between past and present, so let me go back to child-david a bit.

2011 or so ( art school days )

Kinda had the sun/moon hybrid thing going for a while, before I even realized it fully and I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from anime & video games as a kid.

It’s just part of my upbringing. This would go on to be apart of what drives me personally, which my brand is a reflection of ultimately

The way I see this art piece now is kind of like stumbling across something shattered. Putting the pieces together is kind of what I’ve done with the history of the sport with my youtube channel.

Back then I inadvertently drew my own future.

Battling really does detail the main storyline of the sport - since the origins of Tricking can be traced through competitions. By structuring the reality of the sport, I’ve in a sense put together, with the highest accuracy and with integrity, the Kingdom of Tricking in a way.

Maybe I’m being a bit too arrogant, but that’s kind of just how I see it - I think I get to be proud of myself, because no one ever did this task before me. I wound up putting everything together, and finished a puzzle of sorts. Even some of the best organizations the have a large influence on the sport, and even top competitors, didn’t see things my way - but I suspect that it’s because I don’t quite run a business in the world of tricking, but rather approach it as a hobbyist and adventurer.
